Front Suspension
Front Suspension
This article shows an extensive maintenance for the front suspension. It is a good practice to have the suspension springs replaced as these loose their properties over time.
You may have noticed that usually the driver's side appears to sit a little lower than the passenger side. This is normal as the extra weight of the driver is always present resulting in the spring sagging on this side. In addition, the lower part of the spring usually shows signs of corrosion which eats away metal; this results in the lower part of the spring becoming weaker and prone to breaking.
Finding the necessary parts is a not so easy process while these lines are written in 2007. The springs are phased out from Alfa and I was lucky to source a complete new old stock set of springs at a local spring dealer in downtown Athens. These springs are the exact repalcement ones even carrying the distinctive red label!
My vehicle features the four nut front suspension (1990-1992 models) and the following parts will be replaced.
Here is the part list along with the Alfa Romeo original part numbers:
Lower spring plate (left side) 60501443
Lower spring plate (right side) 60501444
Strut boots 60501744
Strut Pan Bearings 60501446
Front spring rubber tube 60777337 (sold per meter)
Lower Ball Joint TRW JBJ101
Front springs NLA from Alfa
A note for the lower ball joint: the ball joints are sold complete with the control arm but one can easily find replacement bal joints from aftermarket brands.
